Almasi Stop Smoking Program Overview

Our smoking cessation program was developed by Dr. Miriam and it is the first of its kind in the world to combine the following therapies in order to markedly increase the success rate of its participants:

* Nicotine replacement therapy – nicotine gum and nicotine patches

Nicotine patches have been proven by studies like this one and this one to increase a person’s chances of quitting because they deliver a safe and controlled amount of nicotine to the body and this reduces the physical aspects of nicotine addiction. Nicotine patches are also useful for coping with withdrawal symptoms like anger, anxiety, awakening, cravings, depression, difficulty concentrating, hunger and impatience.

* Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) counseling has been shown by studies like this one to be very effective for smokers trying to quit when it is combined with nicotine replacement therapy. This is because it focuses on changing the thoughts and behaviors which support smoking by teaching the participants new behaviors and how to change their thinking so that they can improve their chances of abstaining.

*Stress Management Therapy

Learning effective stress management techniques is very important for smoking cessation since many people smoke when they are stressed. In addition, dealing with strong cravings and withdrawal symptoms can be quite stressful making it essential for a person to learn effective ways of dealing with stress. The usefulness of adding a stress management program to a smoking cessation program has also been proven by studies like this one.

Please note that we also offer a separate Stress Management Program for individuals (and corporations) who are stressed but not smoking. Email almasiskincare@gmail.com for more information.

Stop Smoking in Nairobi Kenya – Holistic Program Benefits

Cigarette smoke contains thousands of harmful substances which are proven carcinogens (cancer causing agents), toxins and poisons like nicotine. Our holistic Almasi Stop Smoking Program therefore offers the following benefits:

Cigarette smoking effects on the skin Nairobi Kenya

1. Improves Skin Health

Cigarette smoke contains substances which destroy collagen and elastin and this results in premature aging of the skin with the development of wrinkles on the face, crow’s feet at the lateral canthus, vertical ear creases and smoker’s lines (also known as puppet lines) around the mouth. It also causes baggy eyelids and slack jawlines. Cigarette smoking makes the skin dry and course and discolors it with a greyish hue in addition to making the blood vessels prominent.

Cigarette smoking causes vasoconstriction (narrowing of blood vessels) which causes delayed healing of cuts and wounds which can lead to complications after surgery. It also increases the risk of wound infections and skin graft failure. The delayed wound healing also makes leg ulcers like arterial ulcers and diabetic leg ulcers persist for longer.

Cigarette smoking is also thought to contribute to the development of skin disorders like cutaneous lupus erythematosus, squamous cell carcinoma, hidradenitis suppurativa, palmoplantar pustulosis, psoriasis and genital warts.

Smokers are more likely to develop chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus especially discoid lupus erythematosus. Treatment of cutaneous lupus erythematosus with medications like hydroxychloroquin is also less effective in smokers.

Cigarette smoking doubles a person’s risk of developing a type of skin cancer known as squamous cell carcinoma. It also increases the risk of developing oral cancer (cancer of the mouth). Smokers are also more likely to develop lip cancer.

Smokers are also at a higher risk of developing other oral diseases of the mouth like oral candidiasis (thrush), oral leukoplakia, hairy tongue, nicotine stomatitis, gum diseases like gingivitis and oral lichen planus.

Most patients with hidradenitis suppurativa are smokers and they respond poorly to treatment.

Most patients with palmoplantar pustulosis are smokers and smoking cessation results in improvement of the condition.

Smokers tend to have more severe and more extensive psoriasis.

Smokers with genital warts are more likely to develop wart-virus associated cancers like cancer of the cervix, cancer of the vulva, cancer of the anus and cancer of the penis.

Smoking is also associated with a higher risk of developing more severe bacterial wound infections, fungal infections like oral candidiasis and viral infections like genital warts caused by human papilloma virus.

In addition, inflammatory skin conditions like acne are thought to be more severe in persons who smoke. By stopping smoking, one is therefore able to improve the health of their skin.

Cigarette smoke contains nicotine which constricts the blood vessels. This can cause or worsen vascular diseases that affect the skin like chilblains, frostbite, Raynaud phenomenon and other vasospastic diseases and systemic sclerosis ulcers.

The nicotine in cigarette smoke also makes the blood more likely to clot and this contributes to the development of conditions like thromboangiitis obliterans (Buerger disease), cholesterol emboli associated with atherosclerosis and thrombosis caused by thrombophilia, antiphospholipid syndrome, oral contraceptive pills (birth control pills) and other drugs.

2. Smoking Cessation Prevents Preventable Diseases

Cigarette smoking is the largest cause of preventable diseases like heart diseases, stroke and lung diseases. By stopping smoking, one is therefore able to reduce their risk of developing these conditions.

3. Smoking Cessation Prevents Cancer

Cigarette smoking has also been linked to cancers of the lungs, bladder, blood, cervix, colon, esophagus, kidney, liver, pancreas, stomach and larynx. By stopping smoking, one is able to improve their health and reduce their risk of developing these cancers.

4. Smoking Cessation Improves Your Company’s Productivity

Companies which offer Stop Smoking Programs to their employees experience increased productivity of their workforce since smoking cessation reduces worker absenteeism, work impairment and health-related costs. Contact us today to begin your nicotine-free journey.
