This blog post on my Kenyan wash day routine for natural hair is a brief description of the steps I take when washing my type 4C natural hair. I buy all the hair care products that I need and carry them to the salon so that the hair stylist can use them on me.
You can also buy all the natural hair care products mentioned in this article in our Nairobi Almasi Skincare Shop which is located on Moi Avenue, Sawa Mall, 3rd floor, shop C15. WhatsApp +254 721 963 156 for countrywide delivery.
Detangling
I recommend detangling the hair after undoing it and before washing it because it reduces hair breakage.
To detangle hair, first spray your detangler on the undone hair and then finger comb it before combing it with a wide toothed comb.
I recommend detangling hair with the Instant Conditioner by Sheth Naturals. It can be purchased from our Nairobi Almasi Skincare Store located on Moi Avenue, Sawa Mall, 3rd floor, shop C15. Call or WhatsApp 0721963156 to order. We deliver countrywide.
Kenyan Wash Day Routine: Prepooing
I recommend prepooing (pre shampooing) the hair after detangling it. I also recommend using coconut oil since it is able to penetrate the hair shaft and moisturize the hair.
To prepoo, warm some coconut oil in a glass bowl over a saucepan with hot water and then apply liberal amounts to the hair from the roots to the tips. Wear a plastic cap and wait for 15-30 minutes before shampooing.
I recommend prepooing with Coconut Oil by Sheth Naturals. It can be purchased from our Nairobi Almasi Skincare Store.
Shampooing
I recommend shampooing the hair with a moisturizing shampoo which does not strip the hair oils while cleansing.
To shampoo, apply the shampoo to the scalp and hair strands and massage it in.
I recommend using the Moisturizing Shampoo Bar by Sheth Naturals. It can be purchased from our Nairobi Almasi Skincare Store.
Kenyan Wash Day Routine: Conditioning
I recommend conditioning the hair after shampooing to smoothen the hair cuticle, soften the hair and improve it’s manageability.
To condition you hair, apply generous amounts of the conditioner to soaking wet hair ensuring that all the strands are saturated with conditioner. Finger comb it through the hair to distribute it evenly. Wear a plastic cap and wait 15-30 minutes.
I use the Sheth Naturals Deep Conditioner because it replaces the hair’s proteins and moisture. It can be purchased from our Nairobi Almasi Skincare Store.
Rinsing
After conditioning, rinse the hair with cold water to close the cuticle.
Drying
After rinsing the hair, dry the hair.
I recommend using a microfibre towel to dry the hair since it minimizes tagging of the hair and friction. If this is not available, use a Tshirt.
Leave In Conditioning
After drying the hair, apply a leave in conditioner and comb it through the hair using your fingers or a wide tooth comb.
Kenyan Wash Day Routine: Sealing
I recommend using a sealing oil that locks the moisture in the hair shaft. Jojoba and black castor oil are examples of good sealing hair oils.
To seal your hair, apply the sealing oil to your hand and rake it through your hair.
I seal my hair with jojoba.
Blow Dry
I usually blow dry my hair before styling.
I recommend using a heat protectant.
The result is clean, healthy, long natural hair.
Styling
I love protective hair styles like cornrows and braids.
I recommend moisturizing the scalp after braiding.
I use Black Seed Oil by Sheth Naturals to nourish my scalp because a study found that it has antifungal, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
