What is Fungal Acne?
Fungal acne is a skin condition which affects the face, chest, back and arms in both genders. It is common in adolescents especially those living in hot, humid areas. Fungal acne is not a true type of acne vulgaris but rather an acneiform condition which means that it resembles acne.
Fungal Acne Causes
Fungal acne is caused by an overgrowth of fungi called Malassezia furfur (Pityrosporum orbiculare and Pityrosporum ovale) on the skin and in the hair follicles. Its correct name is therefore Malassezia folliculitis or Pityrosporum folliculitis. This condition is triggered by the following factors:
- Immunosuppression
2. Use of antibiotics either orally (taken by mouth) or topically (applied on the skin)
3. Use of corticosteroids orally
Fungal Acne Symptoms
Symptoms of fungal acne include monomorphic papules and pustules (uniform pimples and pus filled swellings) which appear on the face, chest, back, shoulders, arms and neck. These lesions are very itchy.
Fungal Acne Diagnosis
The diagnosis of fungal acne is made clinically by the Doctor based on the patient’s history and physical examination.
A KOH test shows numerous spores and short, curved hyphae.
Histology of a skin biopsy cam confirm the presence of a suppurative folliculitis with Pityrosporum species which are visualized with the Periodic Acid-Schiff (PAS) stain.
