At Almasi Skincare we offer the best chemical peels in Nairobi Kenya to improve the appearance of your skin.
What are Chemical Peels?
Chemical peels are treatments in which special solutions are applied to the skin to remove the top layer of cells which leaves the skin with a more youthful appearance. They also stimulate collagen production which helps the skin continue looking more youthful and firmer.
During a chemical peel procedure, the skin is cleansed and a treatment solution applied. This treatment solution can be glycolic acid (a naturally occurring alpha hydroxy acid (AHA)), salicylic acid (is a naturally occurring beta hydroxy acid (BHA)), lactic acid, trichloroacetic acid or other solutions. It is left on the skin for a certain duration which is determined by the type of solution used and the goals of the procedure.
When the solution is on the skin one may feel a mild burning or a tingling sensation as the dead layers on the skin’s surface are loosened. Once the duration elapses, the chemical solution is washed away. The entire procedure takes around 30 minutes to 1 hour.
Superficial Chemical Peels
Superficial or mild chemical peels use chemicals like 10%-30% trichloroacetic acid (TCA), 40%-69% glycolic acid and salicyclic acid. They only penetrate the outermost layer of the skin. They result in a skin reaction that is similar to a sunburn since it involves redness and scaling as the skin peels off. These effects resolve in 3 to 7 days and leave brighter skin with a more youthful appearance.
Superficial chemical peels are used to treat conditions like fine lines, acne and uneven skin tone. For the best results, mild chemical peels should be repeated monthly until the desired effect is achieved.
Medium Chemical Peels
Medium-depth chemical peels use chemicals like 35% trichloroacetic acid (TCA), 70% glycolic acid or Jessner’s solution. They can result in blistering of the skin which is followed by crusting and peeling of the skin for 1 to 2 weeks. They remove cells from the epidermis (top layer of skin) and the upper dermis (second layer of skin).
Medium chemical peels are used to treat conditions like wrinkles, acne scars and uneven skin tone. These peels can be repeated after 6 months or yearly.
Deep Chemical Peels
Deep chemical peels are usually done with chemicals like 50% trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and croton oil-phenol combination. They cause significant blistering and peeling of the skin since they penetrate deeper into the dermis layer of the skin. These peels need anesthesia or sedation.
Deep chemical peels are used to treat deep wrinkles and scars. They may require 2 to 3 weeks of recovery time. They do not have to be repeated for their full effect to be achieved.
What Are The Side Effects of Chemical Peels?
Side effects of chemical peels depend on the type of peel and are as follows:
*Superficial chemical peel side effects include redness and scaling for upto 1 week.
*Medium chemical peel side effects include redness, peeling, and blisters.
*Deep chemical peel side effects include redness, scabing, swelling and throbbing sensation.
Before Chemical Peels
Before the chemical peel session, the skin needs to be primed by applying tretinoin 0.025% -0.05%. Salycylic acid and glycolic acid at concentrations of 5-10% can also be used. This should be combined with adequate use of sunscreen.
